120Hz////240Hz LCD-HDTV Comparision//Comparison - 2009 : part 2 , by Peter Z

120Hz LCD HDTV Comparison - 2009 : part 2 , by Peter Z

In 2009, 120Hz or 240Hz processing is the most talk about topic for LCD HDTV camp. Almost all of the LCD HDTV manufacturers has them built into their latest premium LCD models.

Handling fast moving scenes have long been the problem for LCD HDTV. The new 120Hz or 240Hz processing technology promises to help to solve the fast moving scenes problem for any LCD. The most important features of the processor is to reduce Blur and Judder.

From my personal opinion, activating the 120Hz or 240Hz processing do help to make the picture to become more stable. I can see more details for fast moving scenes, and the image is clearer and solid. From our lab, we also find that the picture resolution is also increased with the 120Hz or 240Hz processing activated.

You can find some digital artifacts, but I like the overall picture which is more life like and clear to exchange for the minor problem.

SONY BRAVIA KDL-55XBR8 LCD HDTV

The Sony BRAVIA XBR8 LCD HDTV is a sleek looking television. The front speakers of the tv seems floating in the air on each side of the screen. However, compare to the last generation XBR series "floating tv", this one is a little bit passive.

The HDTV features TRILUMINOS RGB Dynamic LED for it back-light system, according to Sony, it can produce a more even lighting image, deep black color and higher contrast ratio for the overall picture. One of the most important features of the HDTV is the built-in 120Hz processor which the company called it Motionflow 120Hz PRO technology. The technology promises to enhance motion and deliver a smoother and clearer picture.

After our test, we find the overall picture quality is very good to excellent. This HDTV can produce one of the deepest black for any HDTV available in the market. The color is vivid, accurate and saturated. What I really like about the TV is its 120Hz processor. After you activate the mode, the overall image suddenly becomes more clear and stable. You can see more details, in particular on fast moving scenes. Shadow details is also very good, but still can not compare to the best Plasma. Side viewing angle is still limited and the image will turn bluish.

Another complaint is the price, it is very expensive and is listed for $4000.

Special Features:

* TRILUMINOS RGB Dynamic LED Backlight Display

* BRAVIA Engine 2 PRO fully digital video processor

* Motionflow 120Hz PRO technology

* 4 x HDMI input

Toshiba REGZA 55ZV650U LCD HDTV

The Toshiba 55ZV650U is the latest LCD HDTV offering from Toshiba. The HDTV appearance is quite appealing. The main features of this HDTV is 100,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, ClearScan 240 motion enhancement and PixelPure® 5G 14-Bit Internal Digital Video Processing.

From what we observe, the overall image quality is very good with a lot of details in the shadow area. The color quality is excellent with a lot of pops and the three primary colors are very accurate. One draw back is it can not produce very deep black color as compare to the Sony or Samsung. When you turn down the brightness control, you get a black color but you also can loose a lot of shadow details.

There is a built-in 240Hz processor and Toshiba names it ClearScan 240 motion enhancement. Once you activate the processor, the picture seems to be clearer. You can also adjust the Blur Reduction and Judder Reduction separately from the menu. The HDTV comes with four HDMI inputs.

Special Features:

  • 100,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio
  • CrystalCoat™ Contrast Enhancer
  • ClearScan 240™ with Backlight Scanning
  • Resolution+ Super Resolution Technology
  • PixelPure® 5G 14-Bit Internal Digital Video Processing
  • DynaLight™ Dynamic Back-Light Control
  • Cinespeed™ LCD Panel
  • HDMI inputs x 4

  1. I find Toshiba is never as good as Sony. Although I think Whirlpool is the best.
